SECURING AND SUPPORTING FIRE ALARM CABLE
----------------------------------------

QUESTION
--------

Mike, I have been subscribed to your news letter for several years
now and have gotten a lot of useful information. I am trying to find
where in the code it says that we need to support our horizontal
cables for fire alarm every 4.5 feet. Could you please help.

thanks,

matthew

ANSWER
------

Hello Matthew,

There isn't anything specific in NFPA 70 article 760 regarding how
often to support fire alarm cables. In my experience, the electrical
inspector applies the same rules that apply to NM, non-metallic
sheathed cable, which are found in article 334:

334.30 Securing and Supporting.
Nonmetallic-sheathed cable shall be supported and secured by staples,
cable ties, straps, hangers, or similar fittings designed and
installed so as not to damage the cable, at intervals not exceeding
1.4 m (4 1/2 ft) and within 300 mm (12 in.) of every outlet box,
junction box, cabinet, or fitting. Flat cables shall not be stapled
on edge.
Sections of cable protected from physical damage by raceway shall not
be required to be secured within the raceway.

Best regards,

Mike
