PERMITTED WIRING METHODS IN PLENUM-CEILINGS
-------------------------------------------
QUESTION
--------
The information in ET News is great. I have a question for you.
Understanding that plenum rated cable is required in spaces used for
return air. For conditioned spaces with no ceilings, would the entire
space be considered return air and require plenum rated cable for
everything?
ANSWER
------
What you and I call a plenum ceiling, NEC refers to as 'other spaces
used for environmental air'. My first impression is that a habitable
room without a ceiling would not require plenum-rated cable because it
doesn't satisfy the NEC definition:
NFPA 70-2005 300.22(C) Other Space Used for Environmental Air. This
section applies to space used for environmental air-handling purposes
other than ducts and plenums as specified in 300.22(A) and (B). It
does not include habitable rooms or areas of buildings, the prime
purpose of which is not air handling.
FPN: The space over a hung ceiling used for environmental air-handling
purposes is an example of the type of other space to which this
section applies.

This response should not be considered a formal interpretation but
rather the author's opinion.
