Thank you very much for your responses to my question last week.
I received 41 responses including lots of great suggestions. A
majority of you like the newsletter as it is though some would like to
see more code discussion, such as questions and answers,
interpretations/gray areas, building/mechanical/elevator/sprinkler
code requirements, lessons learned, historical information, etc. The
most unique response suggested that readers submit their own article
to earn NICET CPD points. What a great idea!

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. Now back to the news ...

Protection of Control Equipment
-------------------------------

Recently someone asked me to determine when the requirement to protect
fire alarm control equipment first appeared within NFPA 72. I found a
footnote in NFPA 72-1990 that sent me looking in earlier editions and
this is what I found:

NFPA 72A-1987 Local Protective Signaling Systems
2-16 Protection of Control Equipment. When central control equipment
is located in areas that are not continuously occupied, automatic fire
detection shall be provided at each central control equipment location
to provide warning of fire at these locations.

NFPA 72F-1985 Emergency Voice/Alarm Communication Systems
2-4.2.5 When the central control equipment is located in an area that
is not continuously manned, automatic fire system-connected detectors
shall be provided at each area of such equipment.

The earliest appearance of this requirement is apparently 1985.

Bad news - good news

I had been scanning old editions of NBFU documents and then making
them available to the public, however, the legal offices of NFPA
strongly discourages that behavior so I took them off of my server.
If you have a specific question about the history of a requirement,
please send it along and I'll do my best to search it out.

INSPECTOR911
------------

Michael O'Brian recently asked me to write an article regarding fire
alarm system wiring methods for his website. You can read it here:
http://www.inspector911.com/column/alarm/firealarmwiring06282008.html.

http://www.inspector911.com is an excellent website chock full o' fire
protection resources, including the code weenie!
