Q & A
-----

Mike, you were here in Bremerton not to long ago for a inspection/plan
review class. Thanks by the way for that. Great as always.

I have a question for you however. If a AHJ requires shielded wire
for the SLC circuit, does NFPA 72 (in your opinion) allow for this.

ie 72-4.4.4.2.1

4.4.4.2.1* All systems shall be installed in accordance with the
specifications and standards approved by the authority having
jurisdiction.

Thanks for your time.

Bremerton Fire

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Mike,

In my opinion it is reasonable for an AHJ to require the use of
shielded cable so long as the manufacturer doesn't prohibit its use.
Fire alarm systems must comply with life safety and property
protection codes and standards (building code and installation
standards) while at the same time satisfying the manufacturers
requirements.  Here's the thread:

IBC-2006 -> 907.2 -> NFPA 72-2002 -> NFPA 72-2002 Article 4.4.4.4*
Wiring. -> NFPA 70-2005 Article 760.52(B) -> NFPA 70-2005 Article
110.3(B) Installation and Use. Listed or labeled equipment shall be
installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the
listing or labeling.

Some manufacturers allow shielded cable on SLC's while others prohibit
it or limit circuit length because of capacitance between the shield
drain and the individual conductors.

Another effective method to avoid problems from EMI is to install the
problem circuits, NAC for example, in EMT or other metal raceway or
install the affected circuits, SLC, within metal raceway. When the
metal raceway is bonded to the building's grounding electrode system
it provides a *very* effective EMI shield.

Best regards,

Mike

This response should not be considered a formal interpretation but
rather the author's opinion.
