What were the results of UL's Smoke Characterization Study?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Underwriters Laboratories' Smoke Characterization Project results were
released, in partnership with and published by the Fire Protection
Research Foundation, in a 2007 report.
The Project's findings complemented the results of a 2004 study by the
National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST). Both studies
indicate that, though the smoke alarms evaluated to the requirements
in UL Standard 217 work, the burning characteristics of modern
synthetic materials may cause a substantial reduction in the time
available for safe egress.
The research study highlights the ways in which the two technologies
used in modern smoke alarms, photoelectric and ionization, react
differently to flaming and non-flaming (smoldering) fires of materials
such as polyurethane foams used in upholstered furniture and
mattresses.
Due to the different resulting smoke particle sizes, along with other
factors, the ionization detection shows a more rapid reaction to
flaming fire scenarios, while photoelectric detection shows a faster
reaction to non-flaming fires.
As a result of these and other findings, it is UL's opinion that
providing both types of smoke detection technologies in a dwelling
unit will maximize responsiveness to a broad range of likely fire
types. This can be done with multiple single-technology smoke alarms
or with dual-technology units, which are currently listed to UL 217
requirements.
Based on the results of the Smoke Characterization Project, the
following items have been identified for further consideration:
1. The addition of other test materials such as polyurethane foam in
the flaming and non-flaming combustion modes to UL 217.
2. Whether a smoke alarm, once triggered, should remain activated
until manually deactivated.
3. Requiring the use of combination ionization and photoelectric
alarms for residential use in order to maximize responsiveness to a
broad range of fire types.
4. The characterization of materials described in UL 217 using cone
calorimeter, smoke particle spectrometer and analytical testing.
A copy of the entire Smoke Characterization Project Technical Report
is available for download from the Foundation's website www.nfpa.org,
in the Research & Reports section.
