THE MOORE-WILSON SIGNALING REPORT
---------------------------------

QUESTION #1264
--------------

I would like more knowledge of how a pre-action system is activated
and how it is interfaced with the fire alarm panel, as well as
explanation on how water flow switches work and the monitoring of the
system.

ANSWER
------

NFPA 13-2005 defines a "Pre-action Sprinkler System" as "A sprinkler
system employing automatic sprinklers that are attached to a piping
system that contains air that might or might not be under pressure,
with a supplemental detection system installed in the same areas as
the sprinklers."

The goal of using a pre-action sprinkler system is to prevent damage
by water to a facility as a result of accidental activation of a
system. Generally speaking a wet pipe sprinkler system is better for
all sprinkler requirements but owners are often willing to pay extra
for a pre-action system based on the fear of water leakage that could
damage computers, books, documents, etc.

A pre-action system must be one of the following types as described in
NFPA 13-2005, section 7.3.2.1:
(1) A single interlock system, which admits water to sprinkler piping
upon operation of detection devices
(2) A non-interlock system, which admits water to sprinkler piping
upon operation of detection devices or automatic sprinklers
(3) A double interlock system, which admits water to sprinkler piping
upon operation of both detection devices and automatic sprinklers
