THE MOORE-WILSON SIGNALING REPORT
---------------------------------

QUESTION #1176
--------------

In reviewing the design of a new fire alarm system installation, I
note that the contractor has connected the valve supervisory switch
for a sprinkler system control valve to the same circuit that he is
using to receive a supervisory signal from the fire alarm system
control unit for the range hood protection in the kitchen. Is this
permitted?

ANSWER
------

Section 6.8.2.5 of NFPA 72-2002, National Fire Alarm Code, requires
that "ach interconnected control unit shall be separately monitored
for alarm, supervisory, and trouble conditions."

Section 6.8.5.7.4 offers specific requirements that would impact the
situation you describe. This Section reads as follows:
6.8.5.7.4* Signals shall distinctively indicate the particular
function (e.g., valve position, temperature, or pressure) of the
system that is off-normal and also indicate its restoration to normal.

A.6.8.5.7.4 Cancellation of the off-normal signal can be permitted as
a restoration signal, unless separate recording of all changes of
state is a specific requirement. (See Chapter 8.) We are certain that
by now you see the problem. How can a supervisory initiating device
circuit that combines the supervisory signal from a fire alarm control
unit serving a range hood protection system and the valve supervisory
signal from an automatic sprinkler system provide a signal that will
"distinctively indicate the particular function of the system that is
off-normal and also indicate its restoration to normal?" Clearly, the
requirements of Section 6.8.5.7.4 would necessitate that the two
supervisory signals transmit over separate supervisory initiating
device circuits to the fire alarm system control
unit.

If this fire alarm system used digitally addressable multiplex
technology and each supervisory function connected to a multiplex
interface that, in turn, connected to a signaling line circuit to
transmit separately identifiable signals to the fire alarm control
unit, such an arrangement would satisfy the requirements of Section
6.8.5.7.4. However, you specifically asked about initiating device
circuits, not signaling line circuits.

SEEKING EMPLOYMENT
------------------

As of 1/7/05 Fire Systems West made the decision to discontinue its'
involvement in the Commercial fire sprinkler market in the Portland
area. As a part of that group, I find myself looking for employment at
this time. My background is extensive in the fire protection field
starting in 1987 to the present, covering the areas of design, design
manager, sales and marketing and fire plans examiner for City of
Vancouver. I would like to discuss in detail with you what I have to
offer a company in regards to experience, personal rapport with
contractors and my ability to market services. You may contact me by
phone or email at your earliest convenience. I am available within one
week for hire.

Sincerely,

Eugene Lathan
