THE MOORE-WILSON SIGNALING REPORT
---------------------------------

Question #1190
--------------

I own a fitness center and plan to have a fire alarm system installed.
What notification appliances for the hearing impaired does the National
Fire Alarm Code require me to provide?

Answer
------

Interestingly enough, NFPA 72-2002, National Fire Alarm Code, only
requires visible notification in the following Section of Chapter 7,
Notification Appliances for Fire Alarm Systems:

7.4.1.1* An average ambient sound level greater than 105 dBA shall
require the use of a visible notification appliance(s) in accordance
with Section 7.5 where the application is public mode or Section 7.6
where the application is private mode.

The Code also requires the installation of visible notification
appliances in Sections 7.4.2.5.2 and 7.4.3.4.2 for those cases where
the designer has arranged the fire alarm system to stop or reduce
ambient noise.

However, due to the nature of your business, the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act
Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) would require you to provide visible
notification appliances, or equivalent facilitation, to notify hearing
impaired individuals that detection of a fire condition has actuated
the fire alarm system. Some state and local laws also require such
visible notification.

Once these other authorities require visible notification, then
NFPA 72-2002, Section 7.5, describes how to install the appliances.
