SFPE Announces New President for 2005 Samuel S. Dannaway, P.E., FSFPE 
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethesda, Maryland January 4, 2005 —The Society of Fire Protection Engineers
(SFPE) is pleased to announce the election of Samuel S. Dannaway, P.E., FSFPE as
the Society’s 2005 President. 

Mr. Dannaway founded S. S. Dannaway Associates, Inc., in 1985 and today serves
as President of the 10-person fire protection engineering consulting firm, based
in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Dannaway and his firm have made significant
contributions to the fire safety of Hawaii’s built environment through building
design and through support of fire protection education of Hawaii’s engineers,
fire service, and fire protection community. He has led initiatives to achieve
recognition for the fire protection professional engineering exam license in
Hawaii. Sam has a longtime record of service to SFPE having served the Hawaii
chapter as its president and longstanding program chair. He served on the SFPE
Qualifications Board for six years, one year as chair and has been an active
member of the Membership Committee. Sam has served on the SFPE Board of
Directors since 1998 where he focused on issues of membership and chapter
support.  Sam is a graduate of the University of Maryland's Fire Protection
Engineering Program and is currently serves as a principal member on several
NFPA Technical Committees . He was elected Fellow of the Society in 2002.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO CALIFORNIA LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
-----------------------------------------------------

Fire/Life Safety Technician:
4000 hours of work for an Electrical Contractor, involving the installation,
construction or maintenance of systems as covered in Article 760 of the National
Electrical Code. The 4000 hours must consist of work in one or more of the
following areas, and the maximum number of hours in a particular area that may
be counted toward the 4000 hour total are as follows:

 o Stock room and material handling - 300 hours
 o Installations, including wire pulling, terminations, control panels devices
   and finish work - 4000 hours
 o Troubleshooting and Maintenance - 750 hours
 o Nurse Call systems - 300 hours
 o Proprietary systems training related to Fire/Life Safety - 300 hours

The experience requirement for Fire/Life Safety Technician may also be satisfied
by proof of NICET certification in Fire Alarm Systems at Level II or above.
