International Building Code part II
-----------------------------------

The International Code Council (ICC) maintains a web page with a US map that shows
which state has adopted which International code:

"44 states and the Department of Defense use the International Building Code
43 states plus Washington, D.C. use the International Residential Code
32 states use the International Fire Code"
SOURCE: ICC http://www.iccsafe.org/government/adoption.html

NFPA has a similar web page with a US map that shows which state has adopted
NFPA 101: (I can't seem to find an NFPA web page that shows which states have
adopted NFPA 5000:)

"Currently used in every U.S. state and adopted statewide in 38 states, NFPA 101,
Life Safety Code(r), addresses minimum building design, construction, operation,
and maintenance requirements necessary to protect building occupants from danger
caused by fire, smoke, and toxic fumes. The Life Safety Code is truly the
genesis of nearly all means-of-egress and life safety criteria codes used in the
United States."
SOURCE: NFPA http://www.nfpa.org/BuildingCode/AboutC3/NFPA101/nfpa101.asp

I thought (hoped) that the International Building Code set would put an end to
building code inconsistencies between US states. I also thought that NFPA would
continue to develop the standards, guides, and recommended practices referenced
by *the* building code.

In reality or at least my perception of reality is that ICC and NFPA are duking
it out over revenue from book sales and training. Meanwhile we see municipalities
adopting either the IBC set or a combination of IBC & NFPA 1 (the new Uniform
Fire Code(r)), or NFPA 5000 and IFC, or ad nauseum.

I'm *not* going to pick a side in this debate. Both have their strengths and both
have their weaknesses.
