ADAAG UPDATE
------------

On January 14, 2004, the (Accessibility Guidelines) Board unanimously approved
the guidelines in final form. These new guidelines relevant to fire alarm systems
are here: http://www.access-board.gov/ada-aba/commrept.htm#702. The current
guidelines are here: http://www.access-board.gov/adaag/html/adaag.htm#4.28

What's Next? The Board will submit the final guidelines to the Office of
Management and Budget (OMB) for review and clearance. OMB has 90 days for its
review. Once cleared by OMB, the guidelines will be published in final form.
Other Federal departments responsible for the standards used to enforce the ADA
and ABA must then similarly modify their standards so that they are consistent
with the updated guidelines. Until then, the current standards remain in effect.
On August 8, 2000, the Department of Transportation published a notice to update
its ADA standards based on the Board's proposed guidelines. These published
guidelines, including those relevant to fire alarm systems, have been open to
public content until now.

What does this mean exactly? My best guess is that at the federal level the
proposed changes will become effective on about May 15, 2004. How long it will
take these guidelines to make their way into your local government is anyone's
guess.
