NFPA 70 ARTICLE 760 PART I
--------------------------

Let's drill down into the world's worst bedtime story to find out how it applies
to fire alarm systems. Bear in mind that I'm paraphrasing here ...

NFPA 70-2002 is organized as follows:
Ch. 1-4 Apply generally to all electrical installations,
        unless modified elsewhere

Ch. 5-7 Modifies or supplements ch. 1-4

Ch. 8 Communication systems; not subject to ch. 1-4 unless specified

Ch. 9 Tables

Annex A-F Information

Within Chapter 7 is Article 760 Fire Alarm Systems, which is organized as
follows:
Part I - Applies to all fire alarm systems
Part II - Applies to non power limited fire alarm systems
Part III - Applies to power limited fire alarm systems

760.1 Scope ... covers wiring and equipment controlled and powered by the fire
alarm system.
FPN No. 2: Class 1, 2, and 3 circuits are defined in Article 725.

GENERALLY SPEAKING ...

  CLASS 1 
  -------
  A) POWER-LIMITED: 
     1. 30 volts or less
     2. 1000 VA or less
  
  B) REMOTE CONTROL AND SIGNALING:
     1. 600 volts or less
     2. No VA limit  
  
  CLASS 2 & 3
  -----------
     1. Power limitations defined in Table 11(a) and 11(b)

  CLASS 2
  -------
     1. 30 volts or less
     2. 100 VA or less

  CLASS 3
  -------
     1. 100 volts or less
     2. 100 VA or less

760.2 Definitions ...
Abandoned Fire Alarm Cable ... not terminated at equipment and not identified
for future use with a tag.

Fire Alarm Circuit ... classified as either nonpower-limited or power-limited. 

Fire Alarm Circuit Integrity (CI) Cable ... ensure continued operation of
critical circuits during a specified time under fire conditions.

NonPower-Limited Fire Alarm Circuit (NPLFA) ... powered by a source that
complies with 760.21 and 760.23.
    760.21 ... circuits comply with Chapters 1-4 and the output voltage is not
    be more than 600 volts.
    760.23 ... in accordance with 310.15, without derating ... not to exceed 7
    amps for #18 and 10 amps for #16 conductors.

Power-Limited Fire Alarm Circuit (PLFA) ...powered by a source that complies
with 760.41.
    760.41 ... listed and marked power limited or class 3; transformer, power
    supply, or equipment 

760.3 Locations and Other Articles.
(A) Spread of Fire or Products of Combustion, Section 300.21 ...
(B) Ducts, Plenums, and Other Air-Handling Spaces, Section 300.22 ...
(C) Hazardous (Classified) Locations. Articles 500 through 516 and 517 Part IV .
(D) Corrosive, Damp, or Wet Locations. Sections 110.11, 300.6, and 310.9 ...
(E) Building Control Circuits. Article 725 associated with the fire alarm system
(F) Optical Fiber Cables. Article 770 ...

760.5 Access to Electrical Equipment Behind Panels Designed to Allow Access ...
including suspended ceiling panels.

760.6 Mechanical Execution of Work. Fire alarm circuits shall be installed in a
neat and workmanlike manner ... Supported by the building such that the cable or
conductors will not be damaged ... also conform with 300.4(D).
    300.4(D) Cables and Raceways Parallel to Framing Members ... shall be
    installed and supported so that the nearest outside surface of the cable or
    raceway is not less than 1 1/4" from the nearest edge of the framing member
    or protected by a steel plate at least 1/16" thick ...

760.7 Fire Alarm Circuits Extending Beyond One Building ... shall meet the
requirements of Article 800 Parts II, III, and IV or Article 200 Part I. Non
power-limited fire alarm circuits shall meet the requirements of Article 300
Part I and Article 225 Part I.
    800.30 ... a listed primary protector shall be provided on each aerial or
    underground circuit that may be exposed to accidental contact with electric
    light or power conductors operating at over 300 volts to ground or where
    there exists a lightning exposure ...
    225 Outside Branch Circuits and Feeders ...

760.9 Fire Alarm Circuit and Equipment Grounding ...in accordance with Article
250.

760.10 Fire Alarm Circuit Identification ... at terminal and junction locations,
in a manner that will prevent unintentional interference ...

760.15 Fire Alarm Circuit Requirements ... 
(A) NonPowerLimited Fire Alarm (NPLFA) Circuits. See Parts I and II.
(B) Power-Limited Fire Alarm (PLFA) Circuits. See Parts I and III.
