GROUND, GROUNDED, and GROUNDING
-------------------------------

When I taught apprentice electricians at Clackamas Community
ollege I gave them practice exercises to perform between classes.
One of these exercises was to submit a one-word definition for
each of the three terms ground, grounded, and grounding.

GROUND
------
This one is easy. EARTH is a one-word definition of the term
ground. In Great Britain the word earth is used in place of the
word ground.

NFPA 70-2002 100-1
Ground. A conducting connection, whether intentional or
accidental, between an electrical circuit or equipment and the
earth or to some conducting body that serves in place of the
earth.

GROUNDED
--------
This one is also fairly easy. CONNECTED is a one-word definition
of the term grounded. The grounded conductor is a current-
carrying conductor, also known as neutral.

NFPA 70-2002 100-1
Grounded. Connected to earth or to some conducting body that
serves in place of the earth.

GROUNDING
---------
This one isn't as easy. In my opinion, the best one-word
definition of the term grounding is MEANS and it was submitted by
an apprentice electrician. The equipment grounding conductor is
not ordinarily a current-carrying conductor, however, it provides
a means to carry fault current to ground.

NFPA 70-2002 100-1
Grounding Conductor. A conductor used to connect equipment or the
grounded circuit of a wiring system to a grounding electrode or
electrodes.

Grounding Conductor, Equipment. The conductor used to connect the
non–current-carrying metal parts of equipment, raceways, and
other enclosures to the system grounded conductor, the grounding
electrode conductor, or both, at the service equipment or at the
source of a separately derived system.

If you would like to learn more about the grounding electrode
system, I recommend the following books:

_Soares Book on Grounding, 8E_
http://www.iaei.org/products_books.htm

_Electrical Grounding_ by Ronald P. O'Riley
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0766832252/qid=10
67189221/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-2406225-7004958?v=glance&n=507846

Of the two, I prefer Mr. O'Riley's book. He explains things in
plain 'lectrician language. Some of his techniques are odd, but
that's just my opinion. I suppose when I write a book about
grounding I'll be better qualified to criticize other authors :)
