BOOK REVIEW _A DESIGNER'S GUIDE TO FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS_
By: Robert M. Gagnon and Ronald H. Kirby
Published by NFPA. Hardbound 6.75" X 9.5" 524 pages

This book is divided into 3 parts, 3 appendix, references, and
resources: I - Fire Alarm System Design Fundamentals II - Fire
Alarm System Design Process III - Fire Alarm Equipment Design
Considerations Appendix A - North Carolina Consensus Document for
Fire Detection and Alarm Systems Appendix B - Fire Alarm System
Plan Review Checklist and Submittal Guidelines Appendix C -
NFPA 72(c) Fire Alarm System Test Methods References - Standards
from NFPA, UL, FMG, ANSI, etc Resources - Contact information for
AFAA, FMG, NEMA, etc.

I enjoyed reading this book. The authors and editors do a good
job of organizing the information such that the reader moves
logically from through the fire alarm system design process. I
also enjoyed reading about some of the newer methods of detection
and protection that are in use that other books such as FASS
don't address.

I'm guessing that we will see more and more books published by
NFPA besides their standards as they look for other sources of
income. The US Supreme Court recently agreed that municipal codes
are public domain, which will put a real damper on sales of
NFPA 70.

Pros: A good basic overview of each of the fire alarm system
elements that must be considered during the design process.
Modern concepts are discussed, which is a refreshing change from
some of the old tired books that continue to be dressed up as a
new revision.

Cons: The book doesn't delve very deeply into each of the basic
elements of fire alarm system design. I found a surprising number
of mistakes (bad info not typos). Too expensive!
