descriptions (Some standards had been replaced or merged with
other standards since the manuals were last published.)
o Updated information about certification criteria and

NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level III
35016^ TECHNICAL PRESENTATIONS AND REPORTS
------------------------------------------------

35016 is a Level III General Non-Core Work element.

General Work Elements are categorized as either Core or Non-Core
Work Elements. All Level III General Core Work Elements
constitute a mandatory requirement for achieving certification
at Levels III and IV.

The caret (^) indicates that generic crossover credit exists in
other fields/subfields for this work element. Read information
on crossover work elements on page 7 of the Program Detail Manual

35016 DESCRIPTION
Organize and deliver oral presentations and prepare technical
reports and correspondence.

35016 DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN:
"Organize and deliver oral presentations and prepare technical
reports and correspondence."

Oral Presentations
How well we communicate is determined not by how well we say
things, but by how well we are understood. Communication is not
only the works we use, but also by our tone, inflection,
gestures, body language, and silence.

The elements of an effective oral presentation are accuracy,
clarity, propriety, economy, force, and liveliness. Be prepared,
be brief, be interesting, and be seated.

The proven techniques for a successful presentation are:
Determine the structure of your delivery.

Use your voice as a tool. Make it interesting by using highs,
lows, pauses, etc.
o You are the biggest visual. Dress up for your audience.
o Use your body as part of the presentation. Move around.
o Prepare your materials so you can shift your focus between
you and them. Work for your audience’s attention.
o You don’t have to tell jokes, however, if you do, direct any
 relevant humor towards yourself.
o Keep your visuals relevant and mixed to open interest.
o Do not use identical overheads and audience materials.

Reports
Eight rules for writing concise reports:
1. Answer the recipient’s question, “Why are you writing to me?”
in the first paragraph.
2. Outline the major points first and the order of the discussion
second.
3. Use visual appeal by using bullets, headings, lists, etc.
4. Use an active voice and active verbs as often as possible.
5. Use appropriate language for the reader.
6. Keep sentences short.
7. Keep paragraphs relatively short.
8. When using illustrations and tables place them on the same or
facing pages.

Useful guidelines for correspondence:
o Write the way you talk
o Define the purpose of your correspondence
 o Identify your reader
o Prepare to write before you write
 o Identify your main points
 o Write from an outline
o Review the document for objectivity
 o Use positive phrases

When preparing a formal presentation for a known audience, the
first step is to outline your presentation.

Major sections of an oral presentation do not include a "humorous
remarks" section.

THE INFORMATION HEREIN IS PROVIDED AS A GUIDE ONLY AND IS
INTENDED TO ASSIST YOU IN PREPARING FOR AN EXAM. IT IS NOT
INTENDED TO BE INCLUSIVE OF ALL INFORMATION THAT MAY BE ON AN
EXAM BUT RATHER IT IS INTENDED TO BE A SMALL SAMPLE OF THE KIND
OF MATERIAL THAT YOU MAY BE EXPECTED TO KNOW.
