The hard drive in my primary computer barfed last Sunday and
after much wailing and gnashing of teeth I've come to grips with
the awful truth that I've lost all of my data. I replaced the
failed hard drive, added a 2nd drive, and am religiously running
ntbackup daily. Murphy's Law dictates that once these precautions
are in place, no failures will occur, ever!

The point is that if I owe you a return phone call or email
message, please remind me!

NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level III
35013 ADDRESSABLE SYSTEMS
----------------------------------

35013 is a Level III General Non-Core Work element.

General Work Elements are categorized as either Core or Non-Core
Work Elements. All Level III General Core Work Elements
constitute a mandatory requirement for achieving certification at
Levels III and IV.

35013 DESCRIPTION
Understand the concept of addressable devices, their benefits,
wiring methods, and how circuit integrity is verified. Know the
various methods of signal transmission with addressable detectors
such as ripple through, sequential counting, and digitally
addressable. (NFPA 72 and Fire Alarm Signaling Systems)

35013 DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN:
"Understand the concept of addressable devices, their benefits,
wiring methods, and how circuit integrity is verified. Know the
various methods of signal transmission with addressable detectors
such as ripple through, sequential counting, and digitally
addressable."

An addressable device is a fire alarm system component with a
discreet identification that can have its status individually
identified or that is used to individually control other
functions.

Signal transmission formats include ripple through, sequential
counting, and digitally addressable (Refer to Element 35014 for
definitions). Most of these types of systems are digitally
addressable.

Addressable systems allow T-tapping of initiating circuits. End-
of-line devices are not required. The advantages of an
addressable system include: lower cost of installation, ease of
maintenance, and increased system flexibility and capability.

Addressable system components include addressable input devices
(detectors), addressable input modules for contact devices such
as water flow switches, and addressable output modules to control
door holders, HVAC shutdown, etc. Addressable input and output
devices are connected to the same signaling line circuit.
Addressable output devices can be programmed to operate via the
activation of a single input or a combination of input devices.

In addition to addressable input devices that only indicate the
address (location) of a device, addressable analog devices not
only indicate the location of the device, but also provide
continuous monitoring of its dynamic status at the control unit.

Addressable analog devices allow for monitoring and modifying
individual detector sensitivities from the control panel. The
control panel is capable of, and can be listed to provide
detector sensitivity readout, without the need to visit each
individual detector. Analog systems also provide maintenance
alerts to indicate a dirty detector, drift compensation to keep
a detector in a defined sensitivity range, and pre-alarms to
indicate when a detector is approaching an alarm condition.

It is proper to install an addressable gate valve supervisory
switch on the same circuit as an addressable sprinkler flow
switch when there are distinctive signals at the control panel
for alarm, trouble and supervisory conditions.

Fire Alarm Signaling Systems Chapter 4
Addressable devices using the ripple-through format require no
individual address, since the address is their position in the
sequential arrangement.

Addressable initiating devices are connected to a signaling line
circuit. While equipment cost is often higher, some of the
benefits of addressable systems include:
o More precise identification of an alarm condition
o More precise identification of a trouble condition
 o Lower installation cost

Program settings within the fire alarm system control panel are
used to determine the alarm threshold of an addressable-analog
smoke sensor.

Two addressable devices on the same circuit should never have the
same address.
