NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level III
35003 AS-BUILT DRAWINGS
----------------------------------

35003 is a Level III General Core Work element.

General Work Elements are categorized as either Core or Non-Core
Work Elements. All Level III General Core Work Elements
constitute a mandatory requirement for achieving certification
at Levels III and IV.

35003 DESCRIPTION
Understand what must be included in a proper as-built drawing
and how the changes are made from the original submittal to
as-built, including distribution of the final copies.
(NFPA 72, NFPA Fire Alarm Signaling Systems)

35003 DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN:
"Understand what must be included in a proper as-built drawing
and how the changes are made from the original submittal to
as-built, including distribution of the final copies."

As-built drawing. Otherwise known, as "as-built marked prints"
are drawings or blueprints marked up to show construction
deviations from the contract drawings, which show features of
the project "as it was built".

As-built drawings should include, but are not limited to:
- As-built wiring raceway layout diagrams including wire color
and/or wire label numbers indicating all system interconnections.
- As-built schematic wiring diagrams of all control panels,
modules, annunciators, and communication panels.
- As-built fire detector location drawings indicating location
dimensions of each detector and manual pull station.
- Copies of manufacturers' technical literature related to all
major parts of the system including detector, manual pull
station, notification appliance, control panel, and power
supplies.
- As-built information should include measured resistance values
of all circuits.

Zone and device labels should be installed on all devices.

Unless otherwise required, submit three (3) sets of as-built
drawings to the owner.

The person preparing marked-up drawings should be the person who
installed the system.

After final acceptance, a new set of drawings is made and
distributed to all persons who received original drawings.

If the electrician installing the fire alarm system chooses to
route wire on the job in a slightly different manner than the
original shop drawings indicate, the original drawing should be
revised to reflect the changes.

A copy of the Contract Drawing is used to record the exact
placement and layout of components, wiring, and systems while the
Project Work is performed will then become known as a Record
Drawing or As-built Drawing.

As-built drawings show detail and exact dimensions for the Work
items that were not precisely located on the original Contract
Drawings.

The final wiring layout of a fire alarm detection system is
ordinarily recorded by revising and replacing the original
wiring diagram to reflect the true system, as it was built;
as-built.

After final acceptance, as-built drawings should be made and
filed along with the original shop drawings. The Owner should
always receive copies of the as-built drawings.

As-built drawings include a lot of information, however, they do
not include transverse stations linked to US Geological Survey
control points.

A common General Contract requirement of the contractor is to
maintain and prepare a set of full-size Contract Drawings
marked-up to show as-built information.

Another common name for As-built Drawing is Record Drawing.

1) One of the references listed by NICET for this element is
_NFPA Fire Alarm Signaling Systems_, 1994 edition. I think that
this is an excellent book, however, if you don't own it yet, you
may want to consider waiting a little longer before you buy it.
A new version of the book will be released on May 15, 2003. You
can pre-order it here:
