34007 COMBINATION SYSTEMS
---------------------------------

34007 is a Level II Special Work element.

34007 DESCRIPTION
Understand the combination systems that are permitted by the
codes, such as paging, music, burglar alarm, energy management,
and process monitoring, their purpose, restrictions, basic
requirements, supervision, and priority of signals. (NFPA 72,

34007 DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN:
"Understand the combination systems that are permitted by the
codes, such as paging, music, burglar alarm, energy management,
and process monitoring, their purpose, restrictions, basic
requirements, supervision, and priority of signals."

NFPA 72-199 1-4
NFPA 72-1999 A-1-4
Combination System. A fire alarm system whose components might be
used, in whole or in part, in common with a nonfire signaling
system, such as a security, card access, closed circuit
television, sound reinforcement, background music, paging, sound
masking, building automation, and time & attendance.

NFPA 72-1999 3-8.2.1
NFPA 72-1999 A-3-8.2.1
Fire alarm systems are permitted to share components, equipment,
circuitry, and installation wiring with non-fire alarm systems.
The provisions of this paragraph apply to the types of equipment
used in common for fire alarm, sprinkler supervisory, or guard’s
tour service and for other systems such as intrusion alarm or
coded paging systems, and to methods of circuit wiring common to
both types of systems.

NFPA 72-1999 3-8.2.2 Where common wiring is employed for
combination systems, the equipment for other than fire alarm
systems is permitted to be connected to the common wiring of the
system. Short circuits, open circuits, or grounds in this
equipment or between this equipment and the fire alarm system
wiring is not allowed to interfere with the monitoring for
integrity of the fire alarm system or prevent alarm, supervisory,
or fire safety control signal transmissions.

NFPA 72-1999 3-8.2.3 To maintain the integrity of fire alarm
system functions, the provision for removal, replacement,
failure, or maintenance procedure on any supplementary hardware,
software, or circuit(s) is not allowed to impair the required
operation of the fire alarm systems, except where hardware,
software, or circuit(s) is listed for fire alarm use.

NFPA 72-1999 3-8.2.4 Speakers used as alarm notification
appliances on fire alarm systems are not to be used for
nonemergency purposes, except where the fire command center is
constantly attended by a trained operator, selective paging is
permitted as approved by the AHJ and except where the following
conditions are met:
- The speakers and associated audio equipment are installed or
located with safeguards to prevent tampering or misadjustment of
those components essential to intended operation for fire.
- The monitoring integrity requirements of NFPA 72-1999 1-5.8
(Monitoring Integrity of Installation Conductors and Other
Signaling Channels) and 3-8.4.1.3.2 (Distinctive Evacuation
Signal) will continue to be met while the system is used for
nonemergency purposes.
- It is permitted by the AHJ.

NFPA 72-1999 3-8.2.5 In combination systems, fire alarm signals
are to be distinctive, clearly recognizable, and take precedence
over any other signal even when a non-fire alarm signal in
initiated first.

NFPA 72-1999 3-8.2.6 Where the authority having jurisdiction
determines that the information being displayed or annunciated
on a combination system is excessive and is causing confusion and
delayed response to a fire emergency, the authority having
jurisdiction is permitted to require that the display or
annunciation of information for the fire alarm system be separate
from and have priority over information for the non-fire alarm
systems.
