NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level II
33028^ BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS
---------------------------------

33028 is a Level II General Non-Core Work element.

The caret (^) following 33028 means generic crossover credit.
Once you pass this exam element, you will receive credit in other
fields/subfields when you first test in the other field/subfield.
Read the information on crossover work elements on pages 4 and 5
of the Program Detail Manual found at
http://www.nicet.org/nicetmanuals/alarms.pdf.

A crossover table reference document is available at
http://www.geocities.com/michaelbaker/docs/crossover.pdf

33028 DESCRIPTION

paragraphs in preparing routine correspondence and reports.
Follow standard business communications procedures.

33028 DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN:
"Use the rules of syntax and style to write clear sentences and
paragraphs in preparing routine correspondence and reports.
Follow standard business communications procedures."

For productive letter writing:

• Plan your communication as a whole before you start to write.
• Do not use stilted or worn-out expressions. Use clear and
straightforward language.
• Do not use unnecessary word or phrases.
• Avoid using favorite words and expressions.
• Breakup overlong, stuffy sentences by making short sentences
of dependent clauses.
• Use different words to express various shades of meaning.
(Example: Use aroma, fragrance, scent, or odor, instead of smell.)
• Never use a word that might humiliate or belittle the reader.
• Avoid all forms of sexist language.
• Eliminate language that reveals or focuses on racial or ethnic
characteristics.
• Do not use words and phrases that are demeaning.

The opening of any letter must get the reader’s attention
immediately. Seven suggestions that will help you develop a
technique of starting a letter are:
1) Make the opening short
2) Go straight to the point
3) Avoid stilted openings
4) Include the reader’s name
5) Refer to the previous contact
6) Use a pleasant phrase
7) Use the “Who, What, When, Where, Why, and Where” technique.

The closing of a letter should add something definite tot he
letter or it should not be there. Four techniques to help you
write a closing that will add something to your letters are:
1) Avoid stilted or formal endings
2) Suggest only one action
3) Use dated action
4) Use positive words
