CPD Point Opportunities in Florida
On July 11 in Orlando, Professional Engineers in Construction (PEC) and
the Florida Engineering Society are offering seminars that could be a
source of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points for those
certified in NICET construction programs: "Construction Management at
Risk", and "Marketing for the Construction Industry". For registration
information, please visit www.fleng.org and click on the July 11 events.

NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level II
33011* SPECIFICATIONS AND COST ESTIMATES
----------------------------------------

33011 is a Level II General Non-Core Work element.

(*) Crossover credit exists in selected other fields/subfields for this
work element. Read information on crossover work elements on pages 4 and
5 of the Program Detail Manual
http://www.nicet.org/nicetmanuals/alarms.pdf.

33011 DESCRIPTION
Read and interpret standard specs and become familiar with the existence
of General Conditions, General Mechanical Conditions, and those
specifications pertaining to the fire alarm system. Distinguish those
fire protection requirements often found in the heating, ventilating and
air conditioning, or mechanical or electrical specifications. Be aware
of the interface responsibility among fire detection devices, electrical
interface requirements, and alarm indicating appliances.
Know cost estimate details as they relate to the preparation of working
drawings. (AIA, A201, 90A, 90B, 70)

33011 DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN:
"Read and interpret standard specs and become familiar with the
existence of General Conditions, General Mechanical Conditions, and
those specifications pertaining to the fire alarm system."

Read (review) AIA A201 "General Conditions of the Contract for
Construction". I bought a copy at Stevens Ness, 916 SW 4th Ave.,
Portland, OR 97204 (503) 223-3137 http://www.stevensness.com/ for $9.00.

"Distinguish those fire protection requirements often found in the
heating, ventilating and air conditioning, or mechanical or electrical
specifications."

Currently, the 16-division MasterFormat published by CSI looks like
this:
Division 1 General
Division 2 Site Work
Division 3 Concrete
Division 4 Masonry
Division 5 Metals
Division 6 Wood and Plastics
Division 7 Thermal and Moisture
Division 8 Doors and Windows
Division 9 Finishes
Division 10 Specialties
Division 11 Equipment
Division 12 Furnishings
Division 13 Special Construction
Division 14 Conveying Systems
Division 15 Mechanical
Division 16 Electrical

Fire alarm requirements may appear in multiple divisions. Traditionally,
fire alarm system requirements appear in division 16, electrical. Duct
smoke detectors frequently appear in division 15, mechanical.

"Be aware of the interface responsibility among fire detection devices,
electrical interface requirements, and alarm indicating appliances."

When responding to an RFP (request for proposal), carefully review the
entire specification and a full set of plans. Review all division
specifications to ensure that your proposal addresses the entire fire
alarm system, including the interconnections to other systems such as
access control to unlock fire exits; duct smoke detectors and other
smoke control systems; fire suppression systems; and others.

"Know cost estimate details as they relate to the preparation of working
drawings."

Working drawing, a drawing, as of the whole or part of a structure,
machine, etc., made to a scale, and intended to be followed by the
workmen. Working drawings are either general or detail drawings.

FYI
---
CSI (Construction Specification Institute) is changing the MasterFormat:

Divisions 3-14 will remain largely intact.

Divisions 15 (Mechanical) and 16 (Electrical) will be eliminated, and
their content will be divided among a proposed group of new divisions
containing expanded content for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.

Two new divisions, covering Communications and Life Safety and Facility
Protection, will be created. The Communications division will address
many topics in the proposed "17th division" advocated by some
stakeholders, although not necessarily using the exact structure or
language submitted. Life Safety and Facility Protection will address
some additional topics related to low-voltage systems, as well as some
subject matter already covered in other locations in the current edition
of MasterFormat.

Divisions 15 through 20, and other divisions throughout the proposed
expansion, will be left blank as placeholders for new divisions
dedicated to topics that may arise in the future.
