33002 BASICS OF SYSTEM LAYOUT
-----------------------------

33002 DESCRIPTION:
Know the basic principles of NFPA 72, including requirements for extent
of protection, system alarm initiating devices, control functions, alarm
indicating appliances, etc. (NFPA 72)

33002 is a Level II General Core Work element.

All Level II General Core Work Elements constitute a mandatory
requirement for achieving certification at Levels III and IV.

33002 DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN:
"Know the basic principles of NFPA 72...
NFPA 72 describes the minimum performance requirements for household
fire warning systems, protected premises fire alarm systems, and
supervising station fire alarm systems.

"...including requirements for extent of protection...
NFPA 72-1999 2-1.4.2.1 If required, total coverage includes all rooms,
halls, storage areas, basements, attics, spaces above suspended
ceilings, and other subdivisions and accessible spaces; and the inside
of all closets, elevator shafts, enclosed stairways, dumbwaiter shafts,
and chutes. Inaccessible areas will not be required to be protected by
detectors except... <- review the exceptions (wink-wink nudge-nudge).

"...system alarm initiating devices...
NFPA 72-1999 2-2 Heat-sensing fire detectors
NFPA 72-1999 2-3 Smoke-sensing fire detectors
NFPA 72-1999 2-4 Radiant energy-sensing fire detectors
NFPA 72-1999 2-5 Other fire detectors
NFPA 72-1999 2-6 Sprinkler water flow alarm-initiating devices
NFPA 72-1999 2-7 Detection of the operation of other automatic
extinguishing systems
NFPA 72-1999 2-8 Manually actuated alarm-initiating devices
NFPA 72-1999 2-9 Supervisory signal-initiating devices
NFPA 72-1999 2-10 Smoke detectors for control of smoke spread

"...control functions...
NFPA 72-1999 3-9.2.1 An auxiliary relay or other listed appliance
connected to the fire alarm system used to initiate control of fire
safety functions is to be located within 3 feet of the controlled
circuit or device. This auxiliary relay or other appliance will operate
within the voltage and current limitations of the fire alarm system
control unit. The installation wiring between the fire alarm system
control unit and the auxiliary relay will be monitored for integrity.
Control devices that operate on loss of power or on loss of power to the
auxiliary relay will be considered self-monitoring for integrity.

NFPA 72-1999 1-5.4.1.2 The time delay between the activation of an
initiating device and the automatic activation of a local fire safety
function must not exceed 20 seconds. Effective January 1, 2002, the time
delay between the activation of an initiating device and the automatic
activation of a local fire safety function shall not exceed 10 seconds.
