NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level I
32001* PLANS, SPECIFICATIONS, AND CONTRACTS
-------------------------------------------

32001 DESCRIPTION:
Be familiar with architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, and
site plans. Review general and special architectural and mechanical
specifications. Understand existence of and relationship among
contracting parties in the construction industry. Use standard plans and
specifications of jobs to determine dimensions, types of materials,
elevations, locations, and other information needed for a building fire
alarm system. Calculate required information from dimensions and other
data on the plans and specifications. (See general construction texts
and references)

32001 is a Level I Special Work element.

The asterisk (*) following 32001 means that crossover credit exists in
selected other fields/subfields for this work element. Read the
information on crossover work elements on pages 4 and 5 of the Program
Detail Manual http://www.nicet.org/nicetmanuals/alarms.pdf.

32001 DESCRIPTION BREAKDOWN:
"Be familiar with architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, and
site plans.
Visit your local plan center and review complete sets of construction
plans to become familiar with each type of drawing.

"Review general and special architectural and mechanical specifications.
The principal documents prepared for the installation of fire alarm
signaling systems include specifications and drawings. Specifications
contain standard clauses and technical instructions. These documents
constitute the construction contract, which governs the rights, duties,
and liabilities of the contractor, the owner, and the engineer who
oversees the design inspection, and testing.

Architectural and engineering drawings are called design drawings when
they are prepared for bidding purposes. Once the contract is awarded,
the design drawings become known as contract drawings. These drawings
are often supplemented with detail drawings. Shop drawings, construction
drawing, or working drawings are prepared by or for the contractor. As
these drawings are used during construction, the fire alarm system
electrician/technician will mark them up with actual locations of
conduit & wire runs and device locations and are called as-built
drawings or record drawings.

"Understand existence of and relationship among contracting parties in
the construction industry.
