*NICET Fire Alarm Systems Element 31002* NFPA STANDARDS
-------------------------------------------------------
Like 31001, this is a General-Core work element. To be certified at
Level III, you must pass all General-Core work elements in Level I and
II.

Beware of the 'Super-Core-Element', 31011 BASIC METRIC UNITS AND
CONVERSIONS. You must pass 31011 to achieve certification at Level II,
III, or IV.

The asterisk following 31002 reminds us that once we pass this exam
element, we will receive credit in certain other sub-fields, such as
sprinkler system layout. We won't receive the crossover credit until we
actually test in the other sub-field.

A crossover table reference document is available at
http://geocities.com/michaelbaker/docs/crossover.pdf

REFERENCES:
"See "Definition" and "Scope" sections of the standards."
NFPA Standards begin with Definition and Scope chapters.

DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
"Understand the basic application of NFPA standards to fire alarm
systems."
NFPA 101-2000 --> Occupancy requirements; when and where are fire alarm
systems required.
NFPA 72-1999 --> Performance requirements of the fire alarm system, once
it's installed.
A complete list of referenced standards is found in NFPA 72-1999 9-1.

While preparing for a NICET exam you may find yourself practicing
Gestalt Psychology. The NFPA standards are rarely the code we follow in
our job. NFPA 70 comes very close, because it is adopted by all 50
states (with amendments). NFPA 72-1999 is not a code in any State I'm
aware of. So, from 8-5 we use our State code and as we prepare for NICET
exams we study the standards. It does make one dizzy at times.

"Understand basic NFPA standards terminology, including "shall" and
"should" and the role of the "authority having jurisdiction. Understand
the basic concept of "approved," "listed," etc. in regard to the
acceptance of materials, components, and devices,..."
Definitions can be found in NFPA 72-1999 1-4.

"and the role of testing laboratories in relation to the use of NFPA
standards."
Fire Alarm Signaling Systems (FASS) Chapter 12 "Approvals and
Acceptance" includes information about testing laboratories.

"Select and use appropriate NFPA standards."
UL(r) and NFPA publish a litany of standards. A list of these documents
in alphabetical and numerical order can be very helpful.
