2002 NICET Exam Schedule
------------------------
It is anticipated that the 2002 schedule will be very similar to the
2001 schedule. The dates for the first test cycle of 2002 will be
January 19, February 23, and March 23. The first application postmark
deadline will be December 1, 2001. This postmark deadline must be used
by all examinees testing in the first test cycle of 2002 until such time
as the entire 2002 schedule is established.

Basic Electricity
-----------------

This is the solution to project 1 of 2 for those of you attending the
seminars at Clackamas Community College recently.

Determine the length of wire in the example using NFPA 70 and a
volt-ohm-meter.

            |<-------------  d = ? feet ------------>|

+-----------+      .-.  .-.    .-.  .-.    .-.  .-.
|+----+   + +--.  /   /     /   /     /   /
||VOM |     |   /    /    /    /    /    /    `x-<-Twisted
|+----+   - +---'   /     /   /     /   /     /   together
+-----------+     `-'    `-'  `-'    `-'  `-'    `-'
Simpson(r)
Model 260 VOM

R = 2 ohm
d = wire run distance
L = length of copper wire (two times d)

The wire is 10AWG 1-strand uncoated copper.

Step 1)
-------
If I run a 2-conductor wire on a job site and need to know the wire run
length (d) I just installed (to calculate volt-drop for example) and the
wire jacket does not include this information, I can twist the pair
together at one end, attach my trusty Simpson(r) 260
volt-ohm-milliammeter to the open pair and determine the resistance in
ohms represented by the pair of wires.

Step 2)
-------
My meter tells me that the pair of wires represents 2 ohm of resistance.
I can now say that the *entire* length of wire L = 2 ohm.

Step 3)
-------
Using Table 8 Conductor Properties in NFPA 70-1999 (Chapter 9 page 567)
I see that 10AWG 1-strand uncoated copper has 1.21 ohm per 1000 feet (at
167 degrees F) or;

1.21 ohm
--------
1000 ft

Step 4)
-------
To determine how many feet is represented by our wire run;

2 ohm   1000 ft    2000 ohm-ft  1653 ft
----- x -------- = ---------- = -------
L       1.21 ohm   1.21 ohm-L   L

Step 5)
-------
Remember that L is the total length of copper and d is the wire run
distance or L/2;

1653 ft
------- = 826 ft
