"Fire Alarms Program Update: NFPA 72. Beginning in September, NICET's
Fire Alarms exams will reference the 1999 edition of the National Fire
Alarm Code (NFPA 72). Additional updates are expected this fall in Fire
Alarms and Automatic Sprinkler System Layout."

Volt-drop calculation answer
----------------------------

The original problem:

What is the minimum 7-strand, uncoated copper wire size in AWG permitted
by NFPA 70-1999 in the following example:

    |<---------------- 2000' ---------------->|

+---+      .-.  .-.    .-.  .-.    .-.  .-.   +-------+
| + +--.  /   /     /   /     /   /   `--+  +-+  |
|   |   /    /    /    /    /    /      |  | |  |
| - +---'   /     /   /     /   /     .-+  +-+  |
+---+     `-'    `-'  `-'    `-'  `-'    `-'  +-------+
NAC Power Supply                              (1) Horn
Class 2 Power Limited                         .050A
24Vdc nominal                                 21-28Vdc

Step 1)
-------
Determine the maximum permitted voltage drop:

The manufacturer's instructions indicate 20Vdc is the minimum voltage at
which their device will operate properly.

Step 2)
-------
Comparing the NAC power supply voltage with the minimum voltage at which
the horn will work properly, we find that the maximum voltage-drop
permitted is:

Source    Load      Max Volt Drop
------    -----     -------------
24Vdc  -  20Vdc  =  4Vdc

Step 3)
-------
Using Mr. Ohm's Law:

R=Ed/I
R=(24v-20v)/.050A
R=4v/.050A
R=80ohm

That is to say, the maximum amount of resistance permitted by the 4000'
round-trip circuit is 80ohm or;

20ohm/1000'

Step 4)
-------
NFPA 70-1999 Chapter 9, Table 8, page 567, Conductor Properties, is
where we find the smallest conductor size permitted, which will not
exceed 80ohm per 1000', which turns out to be 22AWG; 16.9ohm per 1000'.

Is 7-strand 22AWG permitted to be used in fire alarm systems?

extra credit
------------
NFPA 72-1999 1-5.6 In areas that are not continuosly occupied, automatic
smoke detection shall be provided at the location of each fire alarm
control unit(s) to provide notification of fire at that location.

up as a searchable SQL database, however, the W2k Server partition on my

operating properly. I spend half of my life waiting for a computer to do
