Licensing Requirements in Idaho

Boise

New Fire Alarm Policy Proposed
To better ensure proper system design and installation and provide more timely approval of fire alarm permits, the Fire Dept. and PDS have proposed requiring fire alarm plans to be developed by qualified persons holding a NICET Level III Certificate, or a State PE (Electrical or Fire Protection) Registration License. This conforms with the current edition of NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, paragraph 1-5.1.3, and related Appendix material. The system designer (a NICET level III or PE) would be required to sign the "shop drawings" submitted with the permit.

Fire Alarm Installer Changes
In addition to being licensed with the City of Boise as Security Alarm installers and holding the proper State Electrical license, fire alarm installers would require supervision by a NICET level II certified person, in accordance with NFPA 72, 1-5.1.4.

Effective Date
It is proposed this new policy become effective January 1, 2003, to coincide with the adoption of the 2000 IBC & IFC codes, which include the requirement that "Shop Drawings" be submitted for fire protection systems (IBC 106.1.1.1; IFC 105.4.3).

Industry Input Requested
We are asking for industry input, to ensure we consider all pertinent information before a final decision is made. We welcome your considered comments on this proposal. Please e-mail comments to Sam Rogers.
